The quiet power of reading aloud.

The only kind of speaking practice that needs no second person, and the one most learners skip.

Silent reading trains comprehension. Reading the same paragraph aloud trains comprehension, pronunciation, rhythm and breath at once — and unlike every other speaking exercise, it needs nobody else in the room.

What it fixes that silent reading cannot

You cannot mispronounce a word silently. Read the page out and the words you have only ever seen written will announce themselves — usually by stopping you mid-sentence.

Read where the sentence tells you to

She said, “Wait” — then left. (not one flat line)

Punctuation is a set of instructions about timing. Following them out loud is the fastest way to stop sounding like a reading machine.

Ten minutes, one paragraph, three times

The same short paragraph three times beats three different ones. The first pass is decoding, the second is pronunciation, and only the third sounds like language.

Frequently asked

Does reading aloud really help speaking? It builds the mechanical half — the muscles, the rhythm, the stress patterns — without needing a conversation partner. It does not replace conversation; it makes the conversation easier.

What should I read aloud? Something slightly below your reading level. Struggling with the meaning and the sound at once means neither gets practised.
