Aesop
What it means. It comes from a fable in which a mouse frees a lion from a net. The point is not that kindness is rewarded but that you cannot tell in advance which acts will matter, so the small ones cannot be safely skipped.

Another way to read it. The fable's logic is simple and stubborn: nothing given kindly disappears. It may not return to you, and it still will not have been wasted. It applies to how you treat yourself while learning, too. Patience with your own mistakes is a small kindness — and it compounds like every other.

What it means. The instruction rests on an assumption about information: you do not have it. Kindness is proposed as the correct default given that other people’s circumstances are almost entirely invisible to you.

Widely credited to Plato or Philo of Alexandria. It is neither — it is the Scottish author Ian Maclaren, writing in the 1890s.

What it means. Seneca removes every excuse based on setting. The opportunity is not created by an occasion, a crisis or a relationship — it is created by another person being present.

What it means. The asymmetry is the argument. Effort and consequence are decoupled: what is cheap to produce can be extremely durable in the person who received it, which is a poor guide to how carefully most people speak.

What it means. Portia says it approaching her house at night. The observation is about contrast, not magnitude — the candle has not got brighter, the surroundings have got darker, and that is when small light carries.

What it means. The word is constant. Schweitzer is describing a slow physical process rather than a gesture — nothing melts from a single warm afternoon, and mistrust does not respond to one good day either.

What it means. Ingersoll treats kindness as the enabling condition rather than the achievement. Virtue is the crop; kindness is the climate, and nothing much grows in a cold one however good the seed.

What it means. An argument from uncertainty rather than sentiment. Since the deadline is unknown and non-negotiable, the only defensible schedule is immediately.

What it means. The repetition is a refusal to rank. By spending all three slots on one answer it makes the point that there is no second priority waiting behind kindness for its turn.

What it means. It identifies the lowest-cost version of the whole category. A smile requires no shared language, no resources and no plan — which is why its absence is usually a choice rather than a constraint.

What it means. A chain runs through this line: courage unlocks freedom, and freedom opens the door to happiness. Skip the first link and the others never arrive. Speaking a new language freely takes courage first — the courage to be imperfect. But on the far side of that small daily bravery is a real freedom: to connect, to travel, to be yourself in more of the world.

What it means. The order is the surprise. Courage is usually treated as the primary virtue and kindness as the soft one; here caring is the source, because nobody is brave on behalf of something they are indifferent to.

The most-shared kindness quote is misattributed

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle” is usually printed under the name of Plato, and sometimes Philo of Alexandria. It is neither. It belongs to Ian Maclaren — the pen name of the Scottish minister and author John Watson — writing in the 1890s. The line survives because it is good, not because of the name attached to it, which is a mildly embarrassing demonstration of its own point about judging on incomplete information.

Four hundred years, and one voice in three

The oldest line is Shakespeare's from 1598 and the newest is Maya Angelou's from 2008. Angelou has three of the nineteen, more than anyone else here, and it is worth saying why: she wrote about kindness repeatedly and quotably over five decades, which is rare. Most writers produce one sentence on the subject and move on. The concentration is not an editorial preference; it is what the record contains.
